President Barroso and Prime Minister Tariceanu held a good and constructive exchange of views today on the forthcoming European Council and a range of current topics including the energy and climate change package, the Lisbon strategy for growth and jobs and the cooperation and verification mechanism on judicial reform and corruption.
President Barroso up-dated Prime Minister Tariceanu on the Commission’s efforts to reinforce European Union and international coordination to stabilise the financial markets and encouraged the Prime Minister to press ahead with a number of urgent reforms in Romania focussed on tightening fiscal policy and cutting red tape.
On the energy and climate change package, President Barroso welcomed the broad support from the Romanian government for the overall architecture of the Commission proposals. President Barroso stressed his commitment to work with the Romanian authorities to find an ambitious and balanced agreement before the end of the year.
On the cooperation and verification mechanism, President Barroso underlined the need for renewed efforts to implement fully the four benchmarks that Romania agreed at the time of accession. He stressed the Commission’s continued commitment to work in partnership with the Romanian authorities and encouraged the Government to treat the fight against high-level corruption as an issue of national importance.
